Decorah Defeats Gladbrook-Reinbeck 4-2

The No. 5 Decorah boys soccer team improved to 4-0 overall with a 4-2 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck Thursday at home.Mitch Cornelius scored the Vikings first goal with 20:55 left in the first half and Kellen Sherburne gave Decorah a 2-0 lead two minutes later on an assist by Cornelius.Gladbook-Reinbeck scored its first goal six minutes into the second half and it tied the score at 2-2 seven minutes later.Decorah junior Devin White scored a goal with eight minutes remaining to give the Vikings a 3-2 edge. Ben Langholz tallied the final goal for the Vikings on a penalty kick with one minute left.

“Gladbrook-Reinbeck is a very physical team. I give them credit for how hard they played, but we stuck to our game plan and our forwards Mitch Cornelius and Kellen Sherburne stepped up big for us again netting a couple goals,” Decorah Head Coach Kyle Nelson said.Nelson said the Vikings played well in the second half.“We were up 2-0 at the half and let Gladbrook-Reinbeck back in the game in second half. The guys got a little rattled but once Devin White's shot snuck into the back of the net (in the second half) we settled down. I also give credit to Jason Olsgard on White's goal because he flashed in front of the keeper and distracted him just enough for Devin's shot to sneak in.“I give a ton of credit to our defense as well because they played tough and kept us in the game. Overall, it was not a bad match for us.

There are few things we need to work on, but we'll take the win,” Nelson said.Gladbook-Reinbeck won the junior varsity game, 3-0.

Boys Soccer Team Wins Again

The Decorah High School boys soccer team continues to win. The Vikings beat Cono Christian 7-3 on Monday.

Decorah's goals were scored by Mitch Cornelius assisted by Ben Langholz (10 min); Kellen Sherburne assisted by Mitch Cornelius (12 min); Mitch Cornelius assisted by Ben Blair (24 min); Ben Langholz assisted by Zak Mangskau (28 min); Mitch Cornelius unassisted (53 min); Kellen Sherburne assisted by Jason Olsgard (57min); Mitch Cornelius assisted by Jake Belay (72 min)x

Boys Soccer Team Wins Twice

Wins against Western Dubuque and Dubuque Senior have improved the Decorah High School boys soccer team's record to 2 wins and 0 losses. On Thursday, Decorah beat Western Dubuque 5-0. Goals were scored by Ben Langholz (PK); Kellen Sherburne, unassisted; Jackson Stalberger assisted by Andrew Casper; Jason Olsgard unassisted; and by Andrew Casper assisted by Jason Olsgard.On Saturday, Decorah beat Dubuque Senior 3-1. Mitch Cornelius scored two goals--one on a penalty kick and another with an assist from Jason Olsgaard. Kellen Sherburne also had a goal, assisted by Ben Langholz.

Also on Saturday, the junior varsity tied Dubuque Senior 1-1. Decorah's goal was scored by Jordan Houdek assisted by Kevin Johnson.
